For cutting Printed Circuit Boards, the "Monodex" cutter is ideal. It has two hardened steel "shoes" separated by a gap which holds a hardened steel, serrated cutting finger. This moves between the hardened steel "shoes" when the handles are pulled together. The movement is small so the "mechanical advantage" is high. It does little more than "nibble" but allows you to cut through bonded fibreglass up to 1.6mm thick.

Drawbacks?

  • It takes quite a lot of hand pressure so you wouldn't want to do this for very long but it's fine for one-off prototypes.
  • It creates a 3mm wide cut so that material is lost and must be allowed for at the design stage.
  • It can not be used for edge trimming; it needs at least 5mm border to work in.
